Here we have the SHARP IR Distance Measuring Sensor Unit 4 ~ 30 cm With Cable-[GP2Y0A41SK0F]. This little unit uses a beam of infrared light to reflect off an object to measure its distance.
Because it uses beam triangulation to calculate distance, it is able to provide consistent and reliable readings which are less sensitive to temperature variation or the object’s reflectivity.
The sensor outputs an analog voltage corresponding to the distance of the object, easily read by an Arduino, PIC, Raspberry PI, or any other ADC chip.
Please note: the wire colorings are not intuitive! Watch out before wiring! The datasheet has wiring details. Connect the two outer ground wires both to the ground, the two ‘VCC’ wires both to 5.5VDC power, and read the analog signal from the Vo wire. The analog voltage out will range from 5.5V when an object is about 4cm away and 4.5 V when the object is 30 cm away.
The long-range makes them a good alternative to sonar sensors
These cables have 3-pin JST connectors on one end and are available with pre-crimped male pins, pre-crimped female pins, and with unterminated wires on the other end.
Note: This sensor draws current in large, short bursts, and the manufacturer recommends putting a 10 µF capacitor or larger across power and ground close to the sensor to stabilize the power supply line
